Maharashtra Ranks Second On Financial Cyber Frauds List

Maharashtra recorded 1,30,000 financial cyber crimes in 2023. Uttar Pradesh topped the list with 2,00,000 cases.

In 2023, Maharashtra recorded the second-highest number of cases of financial cybercrime in India. Half of the financial cyber fraud cases in the previous year were concentrated in the top five states. With around 2,00,000 cases, Uttar Pradesh had the most among the 36 states and Union Territories.

Maharashtra came next with 130,000 complaints, then Gujarat with 120,000 complaints, Rajasthan with 80,000 complaints, and Haryana with 80,000 complaints.

In 2023, financial cyber fraud cases reached 1.13 million. The total sum at stake in these 1.13 million cases was INR 7,488.6 crore. In Maharashtra, the maximum was INR 990.7 crore. After that, Telangana brought in INR 759.1 crore. The amount from other states goes up: Karnataka - INR 662.1 crore, Tamil Nadu - INT 661.2 crore, and Uttar Pradesh - INR 721.1 crore.

The ‘Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System’ was set up under the ‘Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre’ to help curb cyber crime. It saved INR 1,200 crore in more than 4.7 lakh complaints.

On February 7, the Mumbai Police Commissioner unveiled the "Cyber Shield" project's logo. Under the scheme, the police established 13 Zonal Cyber Cells in July of last year. Phansalkar stated during the launch that the city needed a police force that was trained in cyber crime, given that even young children today have access to the internet and digital media.
