For three consecutive years, Maharashtra has recorded the highest number of corruption cases in the country, according to the 2022 annual report of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).

In Maharashtra, the number of reported cases of corruption stood at 773 last year, compared to 749 cases a year earlier and 664 in 2020.

Besides, this year, the state also sees low conviction rate of 8.2 and pendency in the courts as high as 94%.

Meanwhile, Rajasthan recorded the second highest number of cases, with 511 cases last year, while 501 and 363 cases were recorded in 2021.

Overall, more than 4,139 corruption cases were registered in India last year.  This represents a 10.5 per cent increase in total corruption cases in India.

According to the data, more than half of the total cases (2,883) are trap cases. This is followed by criminal misconduct cases (547) and disproportionate assets cases (372).

The highest number of trap cases were reported in Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Jammu and Kashmir has the highest number of corruption cases among the Union Territories.

The data shows that more than 11,142 corruption cases are pending investigation. The states with the highest number of pending cases are Rajasthan, Odisha, Karnataka and Maharashtra.

The Maharashtra Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), the agency that records cases of corruption against government officers, is very active in registering cases which could be the reason why the state has been topping year after year. The agency has developed an app and a helpline number (1064) for complainants to call in.
