The entire incident was captured on CCTV Camera and the Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force (RPF) are jointly investigating the case. According to a relative of Shaikh, Pritesh Tripathi, the former was employed as a driver in a five-star hotel in Mumbai. He was the sole earner in the family and lived with his wife Nilofer Shaikh (47) and two sons – Armaan (27) and Sohail (22).

According to activist Subhash Gupta,

It is shocking that robbers are now emboldened enough to target passengers in trains and on platforms. This means there needs to be an overhaul in the law and order system at railway platforms in the city. Police presence is a must at stations during all operational hours.
