A 17-year-old boy from Dubai was arrested after a hit-and-run incident in Mumbai on Sunday night, March 15, that left a 15-year-old dead. Police said the teenager was driving a rented SUV when it hit a scooter and killed Pratik Mane, who was sitting in the back.

The accused was traced within hours and was produced before the Juvenile Justice Board and sent to a detention facility until March 27. The accident took place on Nahar Amrit Shakti Road in Chandivli.

According to police, the SUV suddenly came out of a housing society gate and rammed into the scooter. Pratik Mane suffered severe head injuries in the crash. He was rushed to Rajawadi Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Sumit Mane, the victim’s brother, told police that they were on their scooter at the time of the incident. They had stepped out to buy items for a family wedding when the SUV hit them without warning. The accused initially tried to avoid arrest. His family allegedly misled police by claiming he had gone to Mira Road after the incident.

However, officers later found him hiding at a relative’s house in Chandivli. Police used CCTV footage to track the vehicle involved in the crash. The footage showed part of the SUV’s number plate. Based on this, a team traced the rental company and obtained details of the person who had hired the vehicle. The police then reconstructed the route taken by the SUV to identify the driver.

During the probe, police also issued a notice to Mohammed Anas Moharramalli Khan, a 22-year-old MBBS student who had rented the SUV. His role in the case is being investigated. The incident has raised concerns among residents. Members of the Chandivli Citizens Welfare Association pointed out that a similar case involving a minor driver had occurred in 2023.
