The Kasarvadavali flyover on Ghodbunder Road has been closed to all vehicular traffic indefinitely from Wednesday after the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) began a detailed technical inspection of the structure following complaints about possible defects.
The closure is expected to put additional pressure on already busy roads in the Kasarvadavali-Ghodbunder area, with traffic being diverted to alternative routes. The flyover is a key link for vehicles travelling towards Ghodbunder, Borivali, Vasai and Virar.
According to officials, the technical inspection and preparation of a detailed report could take about a week. However, there is currently no confirmed timeline for when the flyover will reopen.
The flyover was constructed as part of the metro project to ease congestion at the Kasarvadavali junction, where traffic volumes have increased significantly in recent years. Vehicular movement on the flyover began in July 2025.
The latest inspection followed a complaint that a piece of one of the flyover's pillars had come loose on Saturday night. The information was conveyed to the MMRDA contractor, who carried out preliminary repairs. MMRDA officials subsequently inspected the structure on Sunday.
During the inspection, traffic police were asked to temporarily stop vehicles on the flyover as a safety precaution. The complete closure initially caused significant congestion in the area. Following a request from the Thane traffic police, light vehicles were subsequently allowed to use the flyover for a limited period.
With the flyover now closed completely, authorities have announced diversions for different categories of vehicles.
For heavy vehicles, traffic heading towards Ghodbunder will be diverted through the road underneath the flyover. Officials have cautioned that congestion could build up on this stretch because ongoing service-road and main-road connectivity work has narrowed the available carriageway.
For light vehicles, motorists travelling towards Ghodbunder can use the D-Mart–Kasarvadavali Police Station route. Alternatively, they can turn left at Anandnagar signal and proceed through Grand Square Junction, Vihang Valley Junction and the Titan Hospital route.
Pankaj Shirsat, deputy commissioner of Thane Traffic Police, said the closure and diversions had been implemented following MMRDA's instructions while the inspection is underway.
MMRDA officials said the structure is currently being examined and that appropriate action will be taken if any defects are identified during the inspection.
The closure comes during the Ganeshotsav period, when traffic volumes are expected to remain high, raising the possibility of further congestion on the alternative routes.
