In a stern rebuke to the state home department, the Maharashtra State Human Rights Commission (MSHRC) has criticized its lack of response in the aftermath of the Ghatkopar hoarding collapse, a tragedy that claimed the lives of 17 individuals. Chaired by Justice K K Tated and including member MA Sayeed, the MSHRC bench demanded explanations from the additional chief secretary (home) for the department's failure to adhere to its summons.
Failure to Comply with Summons Draws Ire
Despite being summoned to appear before the commission, the state home department opted not to send a representative or submit a report, sparking outrage from the human rights body. The commission's order expressed shock and disapproval at the department's non-compliance, labeling it a blatant disregard for their directives. In response to the department's inaction, the MSHRC has directed the Special Inspector General of Police Investigation Wing to investigate the matter further. Legal actions under Section 166A of the Indian Penal Code are being considered, heightening pressure on the department to be held accountable for its actions.
Confusion Surrounds Permissions for Hoarding Installation
The commission's scrutiny extends beyond the department's lack of response to the issuance of permissions for the hoarding installation itself. Discrepancies within the report submitted by the Government Railway Police (GRP) regarding authorization processes for a petrol pump have raised questions about accountability and transparency in the approval process. As the investigation unfolds, the court emphasizes the need for clarity and transparency. The Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr. Patil, has been tasked with providing a detailed affidavit with clarifications and supporting documents by the next hearing, signaling a commitment to uncovering the truth behind the tragic incident.
These developments come amid ongoing efforts by the Special Investigation Team, which has made significant strides in the case by arresting several individuals, including Bhavesh Bhinde, the director of the hoarding company. As the investigation progresses, the public awaits further updates on the pursuit of justice for the victims of the Ghatkopar hoarding collapse.
