A real estate agent, D S Pratap, from Andheri, Mumbai, was recently scammed of INR 2 lakh by con artists pretending to arrange a dealership of a Tata Power EV charging station.

The complainant informed the MIDC police that he made the payment between March 12 and March 24, after receiving a call from someone claiming to be from a Tata Power EZ Charge.

The caller requested an additional INR 7.5 lakh, after demanding INR 25,500 as security deposit and INR 1.7 lakh to acquire the dealership. The scammer obtained Pratap's banking information and withdrew funds for the dealership's registration and the security deposit.

The Mumbai Police is investigating in the matter. Police are tracing the caller and looking for information about the account into which Pratap made the money transfer. Pratap had mailed copies of his Aadhaar and Pan cards, his bank passbook, his education certificate, and a voided cheque to start the registration procedure.

These scammers also presented phoney no-objection certificates for the installation of EV chargers from fictitious businesses or government agencies or departments.

Tata Power has been warning residents not to fall victim to such scams on social media and other channels. The company recently published a public notice in a national newspaper, cautioning the public against dishonest people, businesses, or agencies that solicit money for the installation of EZ charge points while pretending to be EV charging franchise holders.

A senior spokesperson from Tata Power recommended people to contact them by email at evchargercare@tatapower.com or by calling 18008332233, which is a toll-free number. The company also provides advisories on social media and in newspaper ads to alert the public of such scams.
