According to the crime report released by the police, the crime detection rate in Mumbai has decreased by 14% in 2022 as compared to 2021, while the total crime has increased by 9%. If the rate of cybercrime cases decreases, the overall crime cases will fall.   

Following the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of theft cases tripled to 14,818 last year as compared to 4,534 cases registered in 2021. Street crimes include theft, assault, molestation, dacoity, and chain snatching. There was a slight increase in the number of serious crimes such as robbery, rape and extortion but at the same time, there was a decrease in crimes such as murder, house breaking and rioting in 2022.

Meanwhile, as per the report, the number of cases of crimes against women and children has increased from 5,497 in 2021 to 6,133 in 2022. The 6,133 cases include 1,157 offenses registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act and 1,155 cases of kidnapping of minor boys and girls.

The number of rape cases in Mumbai has increased from 888 in 2021 to 984 in 2022. Molestation crimes also increased from 2,076 in 2021 to 2,347 in 2022. The other cases which saw an increase are dowry-related cases which increased from 785 in 2016.
