Mumbai Police have registered an FIR against at least 10 students from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) for allegedly organising an unauthorised event to mark the death anniversary of former Delhi University professor G N Saibaba on Sunday, October 12. The FIR also cites the alleged raising of slogans in support of Sharjeel Imam and Umar Khalid, both currently in jail in connection with the Delhi riots case.
The complaint was lodged by the TISS administration, which claimed no prior knowledge or permission was sought for the event. A police officer confirmed that offences have been registered under sections relating to unlawful assembly, promoting enmity, and prejudicing national harmony, among others. Notices have been issued to the students involved.
No permission was taken from Mumbai Police for this event,” the officer said.
According to a senior TISS official, the event, held around 9 pm on campus, went unnoticed initially due to it being a Sunday. The administration learned of the gathering after photos and videos surfaced on social media, some of which tagged the Mumbai Police and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, questioning why the event was allowed.
TISS is expected to issue show-cause notices to the students named in the FIR, as part of standard procedure for violations of institutional rules.
In the videos circulated online, students can be seen gathered around a photograph of G N Saibaba, who passed away on October 12, 2024, in Hyderabad. Saibaba, a former DU professor, had been arrested under the UAPA over alleged Naxal links and spent nearly a decade in prison before being acquitted.
