Seems like Mumbaikars cannot resist the urge of meeting their friends. Mumbai Police has registered 2,131 cases for overcrowding in public places. This is the maximum number of cases Mumbai Police has filed under the prohibitory order Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) section 188 from March 20 to April 12. The police filed 2,131 cases for gathering out of the total 2,935 cases, which amounts to 73 per cent of total cases.

Police stated that while people have started following orders to not venture out, there are people from congested localities who venture out without realising the gravity of the situation and its consequences amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Till date, Mumbai Police has booked 5,321 for the violation under Section 188. Out of which, 3,975 were arrested and later released on bail whereas 1,077 were allowed to go after they were given notices. 258 are still absconding and are wanted.

According to the report, 605 cases of overcrowding were registered from eastern suburbs - Mulund, Ghatkopar, Chembur and Trombay, during the period. They were followed by North Mumbai with 473 cases from Aarey, Goregaon, Borivli, Kandivli, Dahisar, and Gorai. 389 cases were registered in western suburbs (Bandra, Juhu, Andheri, BKC, Powai, and Sahar) and 388 and 276 cases were registered in Central suburbs (Byculla, Worli, Dadar, and Kurla) and South Mumbai respectively.

The police categorised the offences under various heads:

  • Violation of quarantine
  • Hotel and shops kept open
  • Gathering/Overcrowding
  • Vehicles without reason plying on roads
  • Hawkers

The police had categorised the offences to keep a track and discourage people from venturing out during the lockdown. That being said, the police filed 572 cases against vehicles venturing out without valid reasons.

Despite Mumbai being termed as the 'hotspot' for coronavirus, people fail to understand the seriousness of the issue. The man may be a social animal but at times like these, social distance is the only way the man can help the society overcome the pandemic.
