Unidentified persons have been booked by the Mumbai Police for initiating a “malware attack” on the servers of the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC).

The attack reportedly affected the database of the MIDC portal. Cases were registered under the Information Technology Act (IT Act) at the city’s cyber police station.

The complaint goes on to call this a ransomware attack adding that it was first detected on March 21 at around 11 PM when MIDC’s sites went down. The agency’s servers are hosted at the MIDC headquarters in Mumbai.

“The ransomware 'SYNack' impacted the applications and database servers hosted on Cloud DC and DR (ESDS) and local servers hosted at MIDC HQ in Mumbai by encrypting the data stored in these servers,” the MIDC said in a statement.

Ransomware is commonly used by cybercriminals to obtain and publish user data or restrict access to it unless a ransom is paid in return.

Previously, Maharashtra Energy Minister Nitin Raut had hinted that Mumbai’s unprecedented power outage in October last year may have been the result of a cyber attack intended to disrupt the power supply in the region. Furthermore, a cybersecurity firm had alleged that Chinese hackers were responsible for this cyber attack.
