The final link of the Santacruz–Chembur Link Road (SCLR) has opened to traffic, completing the integrated 10.30-km east–west road network connecting the Eastern Express Highway (EEH) with the Western Express Highway (WEH).
The newly opened 1.40-km Bharat Nagar Road (University Area)–Vakola Junction Elevated Corridor, constructed under SCLR Extension Phase II, is the final and critical link in the network, which has been developed in phases since the original SCLR was opened.
With the completion of Phase I extensions and Phase II, the SCLR now provides end-to-end, signal-free connectivity between the eastern and western suburbs through EEH, Chembur, Tilak Nagar, Kapadia Nagar, Kurla, Kalina, BKC, Mumbai University, Vakola and WEH.
The elevated corridor is expected to provide seamless two-way connectivity between Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) and the Western Express Highway. Traffic travelling from BKC will connect directly to the SCLR cable-stayed bridge, while vehicles approaching from the WEH will move from the existing Vakola Flyover onto the newly constructed elevated corridor.
The completed corridor will allow motorists to bypass congested stretches in Kalina, Vakola and Kalanagar, with travel time on key journeys expected to fall by around 35 minutes.
The project is also expected to improve connectivity to important destinations including BKC, Mumbai University and Mumbai International Airport, as well as major commercial and residential areas in the city.
Officials expect the completed SCLR network to improve traffic flow, commuter convenience and road safety while reducing congestion, fuel consumption and vehicle operating costs. The improved traffic movement could also contribute to lower vehicular emissions.
The completion of the SCLR network marks a significant addition to Mumbai's east–west road connectivity and is expected to ease travel between the city's eastern and western corridors.
