Mumbai Police have busted three fake call centres operating from Kurla (West) that allegedly cheated people by posing as representatives of insurance companies and promising bonus payouts. A total of 12 accused have been arrested, and assets worth INR 17 lakh have been seized during the operation.
The action followed a complaint lodged by a Govandi resident, who alleged that fraudsters posing as insurance company executives convinced him to share his bank account details on the pretext of processing an insurance bonus. The accused allegedly siphoned off INR 3.5 lakh from his account. Following the complaint, Govandi Police registered a case and launched an investigation.
During the probe, police traced the operation to Kurla (West) and initially detained two suspects. Their interrogation led investigators to three fake call centres allegedly being used to carry out the fraud. Police subsequently raided the premises and arrested 12 people.
Officials seized 29 computers, five laptops, 15 mobile phones, 15 SIM cards, and gold purchased using the proceeds of the alleged fraud, with the total value of the seized items estimated at INR 17 lakh.
Police suspect the accused targeted multiple victims over the past few months using similar tactics and are investigating whether the racket has links to other cyber fraud cases. Further investigation is underway.
