Mumbai Police caught a man who was allegedly trying to sell codeine-based cough syrup (CBCS). He was caught with 79 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup. The police seized all the bottles and detained him. The police officials are now investigating the case. The person, who was supposed to receive the said consignment, is yet to be known.

According to the police, a tip that Sohail Abdul Sattar Qureshi would be coming to Dattuwadi, Mumbra with a consignment of CBCS was received on August 6 at 8:45 AM. Around 11:20 AM, a police squad arrived at the scene; located and arrested the suspect. The police crew discovered 79 bottles of CBCS, each measuring 100 ml. The bottles were confiscated and sent for additional analysis.

On being questioned by police, Qureshi said that he had bought the said consignment from Ramiz Shafiahmed Shaikh. Ramiz is also a Mumbra resident. It is allegedly being sold further by Qureshi.

Police said, "The said drug is used to induce sleep/drowsiness. The said drug is also misused for intoxication and if consumed in excess, it can cause harm to the health."

A case has been registered against the accused under section 328 (causing harm by means of poison, etc., with intent to commit an offense) of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.

The Mumbai Anti Narcotics Cell's crime branch busted a CBCS racket carried out by pharmaceutical company medical personnel on August 5. The ANC while cracking this case detained 5 drug dealers, 2 out of the 5 were Medical Representatives (MR). Drugs worth INR 28,27,500 and INR 3,50,000 in cash were found during this operation by police. Prima facie indicates that both MRs may have purchased CBCS bottles using phony invoices and stamps belonging to doctors. Rubber stamps and purchase orders that were fake were discovered during the search.

In a case involving alleged drug trafficking, the Anti Narcotic Cell of the Mumbai Police detained five people, including four medical representatives. In Kandivali, they have seized a sizable number of bottles containing cough syrup with codeine that are worth INR 30 lakh. The scam was uncovered on August 1 when the Azad Maidan unit caught Umar Nadim with 100 CBCS bottles.

Over-the-counter (OTC) cough syrups contain codeine. Codeine-containing cough syrup (CCS)  comes in 100ml bottles and works similarly to a 30 mg morphine pill. In truth, relatively few people are aware that the drug belongs to the heroin family of narcotics and is an addictive drug. Codeine is technically a pro-drug made from opium that the liver transforms into morphine.

Codeine-containing cough syrup (CCS) results in high blood pressure, auditory hallucinations, heat or cold flashes, a faster heartbeat, distorted vision, and dizziness. This is just the very tip of the iceberg.
