After years of persistent efforts by the Mumbai Police Cyber Cell, they are finally beginning to see success in reducing the cybercrime. However, the low investigation rate remains a cause for concern.

Following a rapid increase in cybercrime for several years, the Mumbai Police have finally managed to reduce the number of cases to some extent.

According to 2025 data, there were 259 fewer cybercrime cases compared to 2024, marking the first decrease in three years. While the reduction in cybercrime is a positive sign, the investigation rate remains very low.

Of the 4,825 cases registered in 2025, the police were only able to solve 1,542. A total of 1,410 accused were arrested in these cases.

According to Mumbai Police data, the most common cases in 2025 were related to stock market investment fraud (856), followed by credit and debit card fraud (655), job offer scams (303), and fraud under various schemes (266). A total of 252 cases of obscene messages and harassment were reported during the year, and 191 cases of digital arrest scams were reported, which is one of the most common types of cybercrime.

Awareness is the only solution

Cybercriminals have exploited the lack of awareness among people regarding internet security and online financial transactions, leading to a significant increase in such cases over the past decade. Since it is impossible to stop or limit the use of the internet, awareness is the only solution. The Mumbai Police have intensified their cyber awareness campaigns through schools, colleges, and community programs. Officials have also visited the homes of elderly people living alone to educate them about online frauds such as digital arrest scams. An official stated that this is expected to result in an approximately 5 percent reduction in cybercrime in 2025.
