A woman lost INR 2 lakhs after receiving a message to pay the electricity bill on her mobile and downloading the app on her mobile as per the instructions received. A case has been registered against an unknown person at the D. B.Marg Police Station and the police are investigating the matter.


Complainant lives with family in Girgaon area. On the morning of November 27, she received a message on her mobile. Current months electricity bill is not paid and it is not updated yet. Therefore, it was mentioned in the message that the electricity supply to their house will be cut off at night. A mobile number was also given in this message. So the complainant woman contacted this mobile number. At this time, the person speaking from the front said that his name is Devesh Joshi.

He asked the complainant to download two mobile apps namely 'Electric Bill Sign' and 'Electric Bill Update'. He also said that her electricity supply will not be cut off after that. As told by Joshi, the complainant woman downloaded both the mobile apps. After that, she noticed that online transactions were being done through the nationalised bank account.


When she inspected, there were transactions of around two lakh rupees from her bank account. After receiving messages about these transactions, she realised that it was a form of fraud. She immediately went to the bank and asked to stop the transaction.

After verifying the complaint, the police registered a case against the unidentified person under the Information Technology Prevention Act including fraud. Information about the transactions in the bank account of the complainant woman has been sought from the bank. Further investigation will be done through it, said the officer.
