On Wednesday, September 1, advocate Rama Sarode announced that a Rape Crisis Centre, an initiative to support rape survivors and offer them legal aid, has been set up by the NGO Sahyog Trust to rehabilitate rape survivors across Maharashtra.

According to reports, Sarode further added that providing legal aid to women recovering from the physical and mental trauma due to rape would not only prevent such crimes but also help the oppressed women to live with strength, dignity and confidence.

Earlier in a shocking incident, a 22-year-old MBA student from Mumbai was allegedly gang-raped by a group of six people on an isolated stretch at the Chamundi foothills. The student reportedly went on a ride with her classmate. The classmate riding the bike, along with a local resident was thrashed as they tried to protect the said victim, the officials informed.

The woman from Mumbai was admitted to the hospital with injuries and in a state of shock. On Wednesday, August 25, she spoke to the officials and a case has been filed. Moreover, one person reportedly working as a mason has been detained for questioning.

On the other hand, according to a report in the Times of India, the state of Maharashtra has recorded a 62 per cent rise in cases of rape of women belonging to scheduled caste or scheduled tribes between the years 2017 to 2019, as per the data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).
