The number of cybercrime cases in Mumbai were surged by 70 per cent in 2022, according to Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The rise in cyber fraud cases was reported between November 2021 and November 2022.

Fadnavis has revealed that 4,286 incidences of cyber fraud were reported in Mumbai up to November 2022.

Out of the total 1,294 credit card and internet fraud cases reported, only 37 have been resolved. Moreover, only 279 of the 4,268 cyber fraud cases reported up to November 2022 have been resolved. The number of unresolved cases indicates the need for more stringent measures to combat cyber fraud.

Fadnavis further stated that online shopping, cryptocurrency investments, college admissions, insurance, investments, and employment fraud totaled 2,216 instances of fraud.

Mumbai has five police stations that specialise in finding cybercrimes, according to Fadnavis. However, with the increasing number of cybercrime cases, it is essential to raise awareness and implement more stringent measures to combat cyber fraud. The need for specialised cybercrime units in law enforcement agencies is vital to address this growing issue.

The high number of cyber fraud cases have raised concerns about online safety. In addition to  this, reports stated that there was low rate of resolution of cases.
