A complaint has been filed against former Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis who is the leader of the opposition (LoP) in the state legislative assembly. The complaint was filed at Sitaburdi Police station in Nagpur for allegedly causing loss to a public sector bank.

The complaint was filed by Activist Mohnish Jabalpure which has alleged that while in office Fadnavis “conspired” against a public sector bank by allowing transfers of government account from it to Axis Bank.

According to a report published in the National Herald, in his complaint, Jabalpure has said that Fadnavis allowed his wife Amruta Fadnavis to indulge in “profiteering”. Amruta Fadnavis was the corporate head (western India) and Vice President at Axis Bank during Fadnavis’ tenure as the Chief Minister.

“On May 11, 2017, the BJP-led government in Maharashtra issued a circular which allowed the transfer of salary accounts of police personnel as well as beneficiaries of the Sanjay Gandhi Niradhar Yojana to Axis Bank. This led to a loss for the nationalised banks which were handling these salary accounts earlier,” the complaint mentions.

A petition was also filed in the Bombay High Court demanding action against the former Chief Minister for transferring salary accounts of the police department to Axis Bank. The Bombay HC has asked Fadnavis to respond to the petition.

The Bombay HC had issued notices to the additional chief secretary of the home department along with the Director-General of Police seeking replies within eight weeks.

Maharashtra Government was one of its most important clients of the Axis bank it has linked over two lakh police personnel salary account worth more than ₹11,000 crores in the bank.

However, after coming to power, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray removed those accounts from Axis Bank and transfer it to a nationalised bank. Earlier, these accounts were in the State Bank of India (SBI).
