Police to dispose 23 tonnes of ephedrine drug seized in 2016

After two years of the expose of the ephedrine drug case which involved former Bollywood actress Mamta Kulkarni, the police and the drug disposal team will begin the disposal procedure from today. The procedure will begin from one of the government companies in Karegaon, Ahmednagar district. The police had seized a total of 23 tonnes of ephedrine drugs in raids regarding the case.

The police had registered a case on April 13, 2016 in Thane after arresting two men – Sagar Suresh Powale and Mayur Suresh Sukhdare – with ephedrine worth around ₹12 lakh in Vartak Nagar. Tracing the source of the drugs, police found out that it belonged to a Solapur factory.

However, the name of former Bollywood actress Mamta Kulkarni popped up on June 18, 2016, when one of the accused, Jay Mukhi, said that he saw Kulkarni in a drug-trade meeting in Kenya. On the basis, police filed an FIR against Kulkarni.

Further investigation revealed the involvement of Vicky Goswami and Kenya-based drug mafia - Akasha brothers. Till now, a hundred statements have been recorded and 50 people have been tested positive for the use of ephedrine.
