Police arrests two men from Sewri for smuggling rare tortoise

Upon questioning, the two informed the police that they had brought this rare tortoise from Hyderabad and both the men were involved in smuggling.

People, even today, commit crimes against animals purely to satisfy their superstitious beliefs. Many among the society have their thoughts immersed in such beliefs and act upon them with an aim to try their luck. One such incident has come to the fore whereby a group of men have been arrested from Mumbai's Sewri area for smuggling of star-type tortoise.

These animals were smuggled as the people believed in getting a good fortune and making a bounty, however, the police understood the matters and have rescued five tortoises with special features on their shell. 

The case was busted by Sub-Inspector of Police Kiran Mandre, Constable Avkirkar, Constable More, Constable Metkari and Constable Mahadik while were patrolling the area, during which they learned about the creatures which were found in a bag in the area. Upon investigation, the police have arrested two accused Mohammad Yasin Ramzan Ali Momin (24) and Python Ali Liaquat Ali Sheikh (32) for questioning.

Upon questioning, the two informed the police that they had brought this rare tortoise from Hyderabad and were involved in smuggling.

Moreover, on the basis of this information, officials at the Sewri police registered a case against the accused under sections 9, 39, 39 (d), 48, 49 (a), 49, 50 and 51 of the Wildlife Conservation Act 1972 and arrested them.

Reports state that the market price of these animals is around INR 1.5 lakh. Adding more, Deputy Commissioner of Police Ganesh Shinde said that the police suspected that an international gang was involved in the smuggling of rare wild animals and an investigation regarding this was underway.
