The dabbawalas in Mumbai, who are also a lifeline for the city’s office-goers who seek to eat nutritious home-cooked food every day, have written to Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis asking for security for their cycles parked at railway stations.

Several such theft incidents had driven the Mumbai Dabbawala Association to write a formal complaint requesting to take steps to increase patrolling in parking spots, especially outside the railway stations. They have also requested him to urgently look into the matter.

According to reports, in three days, six cycles, which they use for commute, have been stolen from outside railway stations. The thefts took place between September 1 and 3, outside Borivali, Nalasopara, Bhayandar, Kandivali and Vile Parle stations.

As these incidents occurred back-to-back, the dabbawalas filed a complaint with the respective railway stations. In the statement, they mentioned that despite the cycles being locked, they were stolen. Each cycle costs around ₹10,000, most were purchased post-pandemic.

The CCTV cameras installed at the stations have recorded some visuals of miscreants stealing the bicycles. But the police haven't identified them yet. Several dabbawalas said that this is the first time they are seeing such a large number of thefts in their entire service in the city.

Earlier the city had 5000 dabbawalas in the network, but now they are just around 1000.
