A Mumbai-based man has been arrested for taking three girls in a playground at Mumbai’s Kandivali area and cracking obscene jokes with them.

According to sources, a man has been arrested for taking three girls in a playground at Mumbai’s Kandivali area and cracking obscene jokes with them.

The accused has been identified as Mohammad Arju Mohammad Tahir Sheikh, a 48-year-old man. The police further notified that investigation is underway and appropriate action will be taken soon.

Moreover, after lodging a complaint against the accused at Kandivali police station, the police have arrested him under 352 IPC, 9 (m) and 10,12 POSCO Act. Mohammad Arju Mohammad Tahir Sheikh runs a tailor's business in the Prabhat Colony area of Santacruz, Mumbai. On November 25, as the minor girls were playing, Sheikh went to them and made obscene jokes. It all came to light after one of the girls gave this information to her family, as per reports.

The state of Maharashtra had earlier recorded a 62 per cent rise in cases of rape of women belonging to scheduled caste or scheduled tribe between the years 2017 to 2019, as per the data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). Moreover, in the 378 SC/ST rape cases, in 48 per cent of the cases, the survivors were minor girls.

In addition, the city of Mumbai has reported the second-highest number of crimes against women after Delhi in the year 2019. Moreover, the city reported 6,519 crimes against women last year which is marginally higher than 6,058 in the year 2018 whereas Delhi reported 12,902 cases against 11,724 in 2018. However, Mumbai ranked third in India with regards to rape cases, falling behind Delhi and Jaipur.
