Mumbai: All women ticket checking squad collects fine of ₹13.18 lakhs

The Tejaswini squad have taken action against more than 5,000 women passengers found without a ticket on Mumbai locals, further collecting a fine of ₹13.18 lakhs.

Even though the railway administration has asked commuters to not travel without tickets, time and again, passengers have been found without one.

As a result, the Central Railways Mumbai Division's all-women Tejaswini squad have taken action against more than 5,000 women passengers, From September to November 2020, the squad have caught 5,119 passengers further collecting a fine of ₹13.18 lakhs.

The Mumbai division of Central Railway formed an all Ladies ticket checking squad Tejaswini back on August 17, 2001, in a bid to detect ticketless commuters and other irregular passengers in Mumbai locals especially in the ladies' compartments due to which ladies TC staff from various stations were enlisted and deployed in this exclusive Tejaswini squad.

Moreover, as per reports, during the financial year 2019-2020, the performance of the squad showed improvement of 24.69 per cent in respect of fines (₹3.43 crores as against ₹2.75 crores in last financial year) and 5.97 per cent in respect of detected cases (1.24 lakhs as against 1.17 lakhs in last financial year), as compared to last year.

On the other hand, Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials earlier on Thursday, December 3, informed that they will be closely monitoring COVID-19 cases and accordingly, a decision on resuming the suburban services for all commuters will be taken by mid-December. Moreover, BMC additional commissioner Suresh Kakani asserted that a meeting has been scheduled for next week in order to review the situation in the city and make a decision on resuming the locals for the general public.

However, in the last month, a surge in cases of coronavirus cases was reported in the city which eventually led to Municipal Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal stating that the decision to start Mumbai local train services for the general public will be further delayed.
