The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized around 12 kg of heroin worth INR 84 cr in an operation at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport on Tuesday. In this operation, DRI has arrested three people including a woman passenger who was smuggling heroin. Earlier in the investigation, the accused smuggled drugs twice and delivered the drugs to a Nigerian national in Delhi. Therefore, the officer said that an international gang is involved in this smuggling.


The names of the arrested accused are Ruksana Bano Shabbir Shaikh (29), Aamir Hussain Syed (39) and Rais Mirza (37). The DRI had received information that Sheikh, a passenger who was coming from Harare to Mumbai via Nairobi, was carrying drugs. Accordingly, DRI detained Shaikh after landing at the airport on Tuesday. She had a black bag and a purple bag in her hand. There were also two black coloured trolleys. It contained clothes and some documents and folders. The bags were heavier than expected. At that time the file folder in the bag was cut by the DRI officials. 11 kg 94 grams of suspicious substance was found in it. On examination it turned out to be heroin.

Accordingly, a case was registered under the Narcotics Control Act. Police informed that the value of seized drugs is INR 84 crore. Later, DRI arrested both Syed and Mirza who came to collect heroin from Sheikh. Both of them were standing outside the airport waiting for Sheikh. He was also arrested in this case.


In the investigation, all the accused were smuggling heroin for a Nigerian national in Delhi. He was always in touch by phone. The accused Nigerian nationals used to approach Syed and Mirza to provide people to bring the drugs from Nairobi and Harare. On reaching Delhi, he would give them INR 1.5 lakhs. This time too, on Syed's request, the accused lady Sheikh prepared for smuggling. She was then sent to Zimbabwe via Addis Ababa on February 7. In Harare, a man gave Sheikh two bags. She wanted to come to Mumbai and hand it over to Syed. But before that she was arrested. Earlier, Syed and Mirza brought drugs to India through two different persons. The accused told the inquiry that they were handed over to Nigerian nationals in Delhi.
