The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted thunderstorms and hail storms in the interiors of Maharashtra and Vidarbha region between March 18 to 21.

According to the IMD, the interaction between mid-level westerly winds and lower-level easterly winds is expected to cause thunderstorms and hailstorms over Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada and Vidarbha subdivisions.

Normally, hail and thunderstorms are common over Maharashtra in March, owing to the seasonal transition and development favourable weather systems.

The models are suggesting that even after March 21, the effect of the rain can continue for one or two days more, said KS Hosalikar, IMD head scientist.

Meanwhile, lightning and gusty winds blowing at the speed of 30-40 kmph are also on the cards over some districts, as per the IMD’s regional met centre in Nagpur.

In view of these predictions, the IMD has issued a yellow watch over Vidarbha. The advisory over West Madhya Pradesh will escalate into an orange alert, while Vidarbha will retain the yellow watch. The orange alert instructs residents to ‘be prepared' for rough conditions, whereas the yellow watch urges them to ‘be aware’ of the local weather situation.

The storm activity will likely spike by Friday, March 19 and therefore, the Vidarbha will be placed under an orange alert, while a yellow watch will be issued over Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada. Meanwhile, Saturday, March 20 will see an exchange in advisories between the aforementioned regions, as Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada will get the orange alert, and Vidarbha, the yellow watch.

These conditions are expected to bring some respite from the heat and create a cooling effect over the region, as the department has predicted the maximum temperatures to be slightly lower than average this week.

"The maximum temperatures are high in the range of 39 to 40 degree Celsius during the daytime, but the minimum is still in the range of 22 degree Celsius. Though summers have started, still the traces of winters are there during the early morning," added Hosalikar.

Pune has the lowest minimum temperature across Maharashtra as on March 17 as per the IMD.
