On Wednesday, June 9, a 27-year-old woman died after she fell off a moving autorickshaw while trying to retrieve her mobile phone which was snatched by two bike-borne men in Thane.

The two accused were arrested on Thursday, June 10, the police said. The Naupada police in Thane have arrested two accused in the case from Bhiwandi town. They have been identified as 20-year-old Alkesh Momin Ansari and 18-year-old Sohail Ramzan Ansari. The two men have been charged under sections 392, 304 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code.

When the autorickshaw was on the highway, two men on a motorbike came near the vehicle and snatched her phone away and escaped from the spot, the police said.

The woman made an attempt to get back the mobile by leaning out of the vehicle, but lost balance and fell on the road and sustained severe head injuries, they said. She was rushed to a civic hospital in Kalwa where doctors declared her dead on arrival, the release said.

Based on a complaint by the victim's co-traveller, the police registered a complaint and tracked the two down and arrested them with the help of CCTV footage and phone location, the release said.
