The 68-year old woman who was a part of the women gang, who was earlier wanted for stealing passengers’ luggage was arrested by The Government Railway Police (GRP), in Kurla on Monday.

According to the GRP, the gang consisted of three women, all of them belonging to Solapur. The gang is believed to look for potential victims. They would target the victims only among woman passengers and steal their luggage.

They would rob the passengers of trains leaving from Lokmanya Tilak Terminus in Kurla. First, they will pretend to help them with their luggage to get on board and become friends with them. Before escaping with their luggage, they will tell commuters to take care of their luggage and keep it beside them so that it does not get stolen.

An officer from Kurla GRP said to the media, “The three used to talk to women commuters, advising them like an elderly family member to keep their bags next to them and watch out for thieves before escaping with their valuable luggage.”

A 40-year old woman who was travelling to Kerala on July 16 was robbed by the gang. They stole her bag which reportedly contained Rs. 2.81 lakh of jewellery. It was only after reaching Kerala she realized that she was robbed. She filed a complaint later.

With the help of CCTV footage, GRP was able to track down one of the members of the gang – Lakshmibai Maruti Jadhav (who also happens to be the mastermind of the crime) and recovered the gold jewellery.
