Magn2k17, the annual inter-collegiate fest organised by Anjuman-I-Islam’s Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology, Mumbai (IHMCT) was an epitome of dedication and dynamism. Held in the college ground of the campus, the fest went on to tantalise and enchant the young hearts on December 13 and 14 by bringing together students from more than 30 colleges across Mumbai.

The fest functioned with the marvellous theme ‘Vintage to Vogue’ which was designed to be a nostalgic journey that made everyone realise how the golden era evolved and new trends of the society came into existence. Moreover, the theme proved to be quite fetching and fulfilling to the participants as they choreographed their acts according to the underlying idea.

There were cooking contests like Mixologist’s Magic (Mocktail Competition) and The Incr’Edible’ Soup ‘a’ star (Magn Chef) in which the talented students of various colleges showcased their culinary flair by bringing forth the versatile cuisine of India in a fusion of tradition and contemporary style. A trail of attractive food kiosks, which were crafted and run by the students from scratch, was sprawled all over the place. These food stalls served food synching well with the theme Vintage to Vogue. We tasted Barbeque Chicken Chat and Maara Maari Pani Puri and both the items left us craving for more.

The Principal, Dr. Rukshana Billimoria said, "Magn has grown over the years and has been able to consistently provide a beautiful and competitive platform to students of various colleges to bring their best foot forward while relishing delicious food."

The fest hosted a variety of participatory events in sports, music, literary arts and performing arts like rink football, box cricket, treasure hunt, wrestling, stand-up comedy, dance battle, beat-boxing etc. for other colleges.Magn2k17 boasted of a huge list of sponsors including London dairy, LIC, Real Fruit juice, Allana Foundation, Aukland Institute of Studies, New Zealand, Swarna, Allegro to name a few.

I see Magn as the best platform for our students to exhibit their cookery skills. They embrace the fest with such sincerity and warmth; it’s almost overwhelming.”

Sanjay Walvey, a chef in the bakery department who has also worked with Chef Sanjeev Kapoor.

Magn provides the students with a training ground for every aspect of their academic course, from managerial entrepreneurship to food and beverage. The students compete with each other and go through several food trials and guidance where the chefs help them with the food they plan to sell, they purchase their stalls and take away the profits earned through the fest. We feel quite happy about that!”

The guest relation executive and the Front Office faculty, Delsy Joseph told Mumbai Live.

“For a course as vigorous as Hotel Management, theory alone is not sufficient to take students to places,” said Sheetal Kumbhare, a lecturer in Food Production. “An overall development is needed wherein the involvement of the students right from the conceptualization to the idea to implementing it into practicality and seeing their final product on the day goes a long way into preparing them for the future and also gives them an unmatched level of personal satisfaction”, she added with a smile.

Roadies Rising fame Meenal Shah graced Magn as the jury for the dance event. “I never thought a Hotel Management college can have so many talented people! I’m loving the food and the infrastructure of the college!” Shah told Mumbai Live.

Many other hoteliers attended Magn2k17, including Deepak Lenka, Senior.Sous Chef in cluster Role For Hotel Renaissance and MEA (Marriott Executive Apartment) Mumbai who also judged the chef event.

The end of the day was marked by an electrifying live band performance by the college band 'Speechless'.
