In the academic year 2022-23, it has come to light that as many as 9.30 lakh boys and girls are out of school across the country as per the report by Loksatta.
According to government statistics, 5,27,000 boys and 4,27,728 girls have not crossed the school threshold in the last academic year. It is clear from these statistics that more than 15,000 boys and girls in Maharashtra are out of school. In Uttar Pradesh, 3,96,655 children are deprived of education, including 2,16,789 boys and 1,79,866 girls.
1,34,252 in Bihar, 1,06,885 in Gujarat have been deprived of basic right to education. Although Maharashtra is doing better than some other states, the picture is somewhat dismal. There are 8,478 boys and 7,229 girls, a total of 15,707 are out-of-schools in the state.

Various schemes like Right to Education Act (RTE), Samagra Shikshan Yojana, Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao, Midday Meal are being implemented to bring the students into the mainstream of the society. However, it is clear from these statistics that lakhs of children are actually out of the formal education stream. Therefore, experts are criticising the futility of these schemes.
