Many predict that it will be harder to get into medical school this year due to the marked inflation in the NEET UG 2024 results. A few aspirant students have taken to online discussion boards to call for a reexamination and the annulment of the findings.

A significant number of medical candidates and their parents voiced numerous objections on June 5 regarding errors, possible malpractices, the unclear application of grace marks, and an alleged paper leak, just a day after the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG) results were released. It also revealed that as many as 67 students had received a perfect score of 720/720 marks to share the All-India Rank (AIR) 1.

Many predict that applying to medical school this year will be more challenging due to the marked inflation in the NEET UG 2024 results. In an attempt to force a reexamination and annulment of the results, several aspirant students have resorted to online forums.

As many as 44 of the 67 applicants who scored a perfect score of 720/720 made it to the top because they answered a basic question in the physics section of the exam incorrectly, earning them "grace marks" for it.

A number of candidates pointed out on social media that some of the top scorers on the merit list had scores that were improbable shortly after the National Testing Agency (NTA) released the NEET-UG 2024 results late on June 4.

According to one of these videos, it is not possible to receive a score of 718-719 out of 720 on the NEET due to the marking procedure. It raises questions, though, as there aren't many top scorers on the list with this score.

In a statement, however, the NTA offered an explanation for the grace marking. In that statement, they mentioned that some NEET (UG) 2024 candidates raised concerns about losing time during the examination on May 5, 2024, and NTA received a few representations and court cases regarding this issue.

The statement further stated that in light of these situations, the Supreme Court's normalisation formula was put into practice, and applicants who lost exam time were given grace marks as payment.

However, the NEET 2024 information pamphlet does not identify any normalisation formula, according to medical aspirants and their parents. The policy for grace marks needs to be specified in detail beforehand. In addition, no grace marks are given to those who complained about losing time, stated Sudha Shenoy, a parent and mentor for those aspiring to become doctors. She also mentioned that she is presently fielding several inquiries from anxious parents and applicants.

According to Shenoy, parents and medical students are afraid of admittance because of the increase in grades. A candidate who achieved a score of 583/720 in the previous year managed to secure a spot in the government medical college, which is regarded as more difficult. However, the predicted cut-off this year is really high, so a candidate might not even be admitted to a private medical institution with the same score, the candidate stated.

She said that although many states had brought attention to anomalies in NEET, including purported paper leaks, the NTA had not taken these issues seriously.

Online forum users have also noted that some of the top scorers from the NTA's announced merit list all appeared for the test at the same exam centre, according to the order in which their roll numbers appear.
