With COVID cases now witnessing a downward trend in the country, Chief of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Dr Randeep Guleria is for the staggering reopening of schools. Since the onset of the coronavirus in March 2020, schools have shifted their mode of learning online. After September 2020, however, some states reinitiated physical classes. But with another spike in cases, schools were compelled to resume online learning.

In his conversation with a portal, he advocated the reopening of schools where there is a reduction in cases coupled with a positivity rate of less than 5%. In his interview with India Today, he said, “I am a proponent of opening up schools in a staggered way, for districts that are seeing less virus circulation".

The doctor is also a member of India’s Task Force on COVID. In his conversation, he elucidated that those districts with fewer cases and positivity rates can consider welcoming students to schools on alternative days. Other mediums of staggered reopening can also be considered he mentioned. In case of a rise in infection, classes can be promptly stopped, he said.

Earlier this month he said that, vaccinating children against the virus will be an achievement, thus forging the way of not just reopening schools, but also enabling children to participate in outdoor activities.
