In a substantial development, all the schools under the civic body of Mumbai are to be renamed as Mumbai Public Schools from now.

On Wednesday, January 3, the education budget of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for the financial year 2021-2022 was presented by Sandhya Doshi, Education Committee Chairperson in the Municipal Corporation Hall.

In the budget, Doshi made several important announcements with regards to the schools in Mumbai. One of them happens to be the renaming of municipal schools. In a substantial development, Mumbai Municipal Corporation schools will be renamed as 'Mumbai Public Schools'. Moreover, a new logo will also be made for it. In a statement, Doshi informed that the decision to change the name was taken to create a positive attitude in the minds of the people about the schools under the umbrella of the civic body.

Currently, the BMC runs 963 primary and 224 secondary schools. The schools, located at different locations in different wards of Mumbai, will be known as Mumbai Public Schools (MPS) with their original names as per the new policy. A new logo called 'MPS' will also be created.

Highlights of the Education Budget:

  • Provision of INR 15.90 crores has been allocated for hand sanitiser, thermometer, handwash, pulse oximeter and face masks in view of the coronavirus as per the SOP.
  • Provision of INR 21.10 lakhs for career counselling to students through WhatsApp and chat boat.
  • Training of 500 teachers and 3000 students in 12 departments under the first letter program.
  • Moreover, the training project will be implemented in 279 Marathi medium kindergarten classes for a period of six months through NGO Rocket Learning and Akanksha Foundation.
  • Provision of INR 10 lakhs for setting up of 24 department wise music academies.
  • The tender process for digital classrooms is in the final stage with a provision of INR 23.58 crores for primary and INR 5 crore for secondary students.
  • By March 2021, 43 major works of school buildings, repairs, reconstruction will be done in the next financial year.
