In Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)-run schools, Shikshan Samiti member Sainath Durge has demanded the appointment of counsellors to cater to the psychological problems of the students. Durge pointed out that this might help students and save them from committing suicide and psychological traumas they suffer from.

Most of the students studying at the municipal schools belong to economically weaker section (EWS). The economic condition of their family and the social evil in society have a profound impact on a child’s psychology and their education. Therefore, Durge has demanded the appointment of a counsellor.

In 1187 civic body schools, there are about 2.96 lakh students and the number of teachers are just 12,000. Questioning the disproportion, Durge asserted that there should be counsellors appointed for the students.

While the municipal schools provide quality education, the students are getting distracted from external problems. With the budget provision of ₹2,570 crore for the schools, there will be no financial difficulty in appointing the counsellors, informed Durge.
