Class 5 and 8 scholarship tests for the 2020-21 academic session is scheduled to be conducted on August 8, physically. Due to the second wave, these optional exams were curtailed twice before, this year.

With two papers of 90 minutes each, parents are apprehensive about sending their children for the said exam amid the fear of an impending third wave. According to reports, some parents aren’t keen on sending their children to the examination centres even though the papers will be held in gaps. Additionally, even if the exams are for a few hours, parents are of the opinion, according to reports, to give the exam a miss to wade off any risks. Some parents, on the other hand, are awaiting a preparedness plan from the state for the exam centres, before making a decision, state reports.

Initially, the exams were scheduled in April and were eventually pushed to May 23. Teachers then threatened to boycott the exams, resulting in their cancellation.

The state on Tuesday has proclaimed a fresh order. From 47,662 schools, 6.3 lakh students have registered for the exams. Of which 3.9 lakh are Class 5 students and 2.4 lakh are Class 8 students.

100 students each from Class 5 and Class 8 are awarded scholarships from the state in each district. Till a Class 5 student reaches Class 7, they are awarded Rs 1,000 yearly. Similarly, till a Class 8 student reaches Class 10, they get Rs 1,000 annually. The said amounts are directly deposited, in the student’s bank account.

Although these exams are conducted by the Maharashtra State Council of Examination, to support students from indigent backgrounds, students from private schools also partake in them. According to reports, some are of the opinion that the amount awarded should be increased to lure more students.
