Despite recent criticism for claiming a Chinese-made robot as its own creation at a national AI event, Galgotias University has secured INR 42 lakh in research funding from IIT Bombay for a new project.

Earlier this year, the university attracted widespread attention and backlash when it showcased a robot dog at the India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, claiming it was developed in-house. Investigations revealed that the robot was actually manufactured in China, raising questions about the university’s research credibility.

The INR 42 lakh funding, provided through IIT Bombay’s Technology Innovation Hub under the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber‑Physical Systems (NMICPS), will support research to develop a low-cost, portable system capable of accurately detecting the ripeness of mangoes and watermelons. The project will be led by an assistant professor from Galgotias University’s Department of Electrical, Electronics, and Communication Engineering.

The grant has drawn attention because, despite its recent controversy, Galgotias University has received government-linked research support at a time when many other institutions struggle to secure such funding.
