Know more about Dr Suhas Pednekar: Mumbai University's new vice-chancellor

Mumbai University's new Vice-Chancellor Dr Suhas Pednekar is currently the Principal of Ramnarain Ruia College and has made a distinct mark in the field of higher education. He has completed his Post Doctoral Studies in Green Chemistry at the Stevens Institute of Technology, USA and has more than 28 years of experience in the field of higher education as a teacher, research guide, administrator, resource person, principal investigator in various Govt. and other research projects. 

In 2012, for his remarkable contribution in the field of higher education, Prof. Pednekar has been conferred with the award of Best Teacher by the Maharashtra government. He was honoured with Best Chemistry Teacher award which is one of the prestigious national level award handed over by Tata Chemicals Ltd. in association with the Association of Chemistry Teachers, Royal Society of Chemistry, the Confederation of Indian Industry and Godrej.

In addition, he took a keen interest in promoting social welfare through the betterment of 'Self Vision Centre' for visually challenged, introduce 'Each One Adopt One' scheme for economically disadvantaged students, and established 'Slum Study Centre' for the deprived class of society.

As a chemistry professor, Dr Pednekar is well known in the field of green chemistry (eco-sustainable) chemistry and has guided 23 students for their PhD and M.Sc. degree and published 33 research papers in National and International Journals. His contribution in introducing 'Microscale Techniques' in Chemistry Laboratories to reduce the pollution as well as the cost of experiment has been well applauded.

He has travelled extensively in the world and visited countries like USA, UK, Canada, Germany, Russia, Belgium, France, Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, Malaysia, Singapore, Italy, Vietnam, Cambodia, Australia, Brazil, Israel and Turkey as part of various academic assignments including presentation of his research papers (total 15) in international conferences. Prof. Pednekar is a member of various committees relating to higher education constituted by Central and State Government agencies such as the Planning Commission of India, University Grants Commission (UGC), National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), Government of Maharashtra.

Prof. Pednekar has been a member of various professional bodies such as Indian Chemical Society, Catalysis Society of India, Indian Science Congress, Society for Biomaterials and Artificial Organs, India, Indo-American Society, Indian Merchants Chamber, Indian Association of Chemistry Teachers, Vijnana Bharati, Mumbai, Rotary Club of Mulund (South), Mumbai, Finance Committee of Mumbai Cricket Association etc.
