In view of the situation with the COVID-19 pandemic and the rising number of coronavirus cases, the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) class 10 ICSE board exams have been cancelled.

According to reports, the board had earlier given the students an option of sitting for the exam at a later date. Those who didn’t choose to appear for the exam would have been evaluated on a “fair and unbiased” criterion, the board had said Friday. This decision now stands withdrawn.

In a statement to the media, the board reiterated “Given the present worsening situation of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country, the CISCE0 has decided to cancel the ICSE (Class 10) 2021 examination. The options given earlier… now stand withdrawn. The safety and wellbeing of our students and teaching faculty is our topmost priority and of paramount interest.”

The class 10 examinations were originally scheduled to be held between May 4 and June 7, 2021. Meanwhile, ISC class 12 exams were to take place between April 8 and June 18, 2021. The board will meet in June to decide whether it can conduct exams for this academic year.

This comes a few days after the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) cancelled the class 10 board examinations, adding that grading will be done on an “objective criterion” decided by the board. Students who are not satisfied with the marks allocated to them will have the option to write the exam when the conditions are more favourable.

However, the board has said that a decision on CBSE Class 12 exams will be reviewed on June 1, 2021, so there’s no definitive decision as of yet. The board added that it will provide a notice of at least 15 days before the resumption of exams for class 12 students.
