The QS World University Rankings for Asia 2026 were released on Monday, November 3. This year’s list has shown a decline for the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay. The institute dropped from rank 48 last year to 71.

A closer look at the data from the UK-based ranking agency, Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), shows that IIT Bombay has actually improved in most of the parameters considered for the ranking. Scores for employer reputation, papers per faculty, faculty-student ratio, and international student and faculty exchange programmes all went up compared to last year. Academic reputation saw a slight decrease.

In employer reputation, IIT Bombay’s score increased to 100 from 99.5 last year. The score for papers per faculty rose from 96.2 to 99.3. Academic reputation dropped marginally from 99.6 to 99.3. Other parameters also showed positive growth, reflecting stronger overall performance despite the fall in rank.

IIT Bombay, which has consistently held the highest national rank in the QS World University Rankings, has been witnessing a decline. Last year, it lost the top national spot to IIT Delhi. Earlier this year in June, the institute also saw a drop in global ranking, falling from 118 to 129.

Other higher education institutions in Maharashtra also showed mixed results. Mumbai University maintained its position at rank 245 in the QS Asia 2026 rankings. Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) fell from rank 173 to 207. The Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT) in Mumbai also experienced a drop, moving from rank 336 to 421.
