State education deputy director slaps a notice on 11 schools for denying admission under RTE

As per the Right to Education Act (RTE), it is mandatory that schools should reserve 25 per cent seats for underprivileged students. However, there are many schools in Mumbai which did not comply with the RTE norms and are denying permission to underprivileged students. 

Parents of such children now have made complaints with education deputy director’s office. Acting on the complaints, the education deputy director has served notices to 11 well-known schools, which mostly are from South-Mumbai, asking them to comply with RTE norms or else face closure.

What's the story?

As per the RTE act, 25 per cent seats are kept reserved for underprivileged students and related school fees and tuition fees are paid by the government to the schools. However, More than 8,000 schools have not got RTE dues of more than ₹800 Cr for the last four years.

On denying admission, registration will be canceled

If any school denies permission stating the reason for pending dues, then that particular school will lose its registration, stated the education inspector. Also, even though the admissions under RTE ended on April 10, the education inspector has asked the schools to continue with admissions.
