University of Mumbai has constructed a well-equipped hostel for international students at Kalina complex in Santacruz. But even after one year of inauguration, this hostel has not been opened for students. Therefore, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has called for a 'one-day symbolic fast' at the main entrance of the Kalina Complex.

40 to 50 students of ABVP in Mumbai metropolis have participated in this symbolic hunger strike and loud slogans are being raised by the students. A large police force has been deployed here to prevent any untoward incident.

ABVP's Konkan Region Minister Amit Dhomse said that a one-day symbolic fast has been held as the university administration has not taken concrete steps despite repeated follow-ups by ABVP to open the hostel for international students. We demand that the university should give a time-bound program in written form regarding various facilities such as admission of students to hostels, electricity facility, abundant water system, canteen system etc. If this demand is not met, the agitation will be intensified.

The new hostel for international students is a six-storey building in the Kalina complex of the University of Mumbai. With a capacity of 146 students, this hostel has all the facilities like reading room, library etc. This hostel was inaugurated in July 2022 by the then Chancellor and former Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari. But as the hostel has not been opened for students even after a year of inauguration, ABVP has taken an aggressive stance.
