The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has so far started 11 CBSE schools and students from poor families have been given the opportunity to study in these schools. The BMC has started three more CBSE schools in Mumbai from this academic year. Two of these schools are in Chembur and one is in Kandivali. The number of municipal CBSE schools in Chembur has increased to three.

The BMC started the first CBSE school in 2020 at Mumbai Public School in Poonam Nagar, Jogeshwari East. Seeing the response received from this school, the BMC had decided to start CBSE schools in other places in Mumbai from the coming academic year for students from economically weaker sections. The civic body started CBSE schools in 10 more locations in 2021. Also started one school each of ICSE, IB and Cambridge IGCSE boards.

Keeping in view the increasing response to these schools, last year the civic body had increased each batch of the Chota Shishu and Kindergarten classes in CBSE schools. Therefore, 960 seats were increased. But still the demand for CBSE schools is increasing and the education department is trying to start more CBSE schools in Mumbai.

Since the opening of Central and International Board schools in municipal schools, the flow of students has increased tremendously. Children from common and poor families cannot go to these schools as they cannot afford the cost of private schools of other boards. Therefore, CBSE, ICSE and International Board schools of the Municipal Corporation are getting great response. After applying online, the lottery is drawn. Therefore, the education department of the municipal corporation was trying to increase the number of these schools. Accordingly, the Municipal Corporation is trying to start at least one CBSE school in each administrative division. However, three new schools have started this academic year. Therefore, the number of CBSE schools of the Municipal Corporation has increased to 13.
