The Union Education Ministry released the Performance Grading Index (PGI) report for school education in the country. It is a combined report for 2020-21 and 2021-22. The report assesses the performance of the school education system at the district level by creating an index for comprehensive analysis.

This report states that Maharashtra has witnessed a drop in its performance. Maharashtra scored 583.2 out of 1000 points. It was placed in the Prachesta-3 category.

Maharashtra scored 583.2 out of 1000 points, Gujarat scored 599, Kerala 609.7, Delhi 636.2, Puducherry 592.7 and Tamil Nadu 590.4. Last year at level 2, Maharashtra scored 928 out of 1,000 along with Punjab and Kerala. However, the education ministry has said that PGI 2.0 is an upgraded version. They stated that it cannot be compared to the scores of the past years.

All 36 districts in the state were able to maintain their scores even if the assessment criteria were expanded for 2021–22. Four districts received a score of 821-800 in the academic year 2021–2022. In 2021–22, 32 districts achieved the 761–820 point range, compared to 31 districts in 2020–21.

Satara, Mumbai, Nashik, and Kolhapur were the states with the highest ratings, respectively.

Meanwhile, for Effective Classroom Transaction, including Mumbai, 35 districts and suburbs achieved highest level of ‘Daksh.’ Mumbai got 87 points out of 90 and the suburbs got 88. For School Safety and Child Protection the districts made a mark with full 35 points. In Digital learning Mumbai Schools were on top with 30 points out of 50. For Governance purposes, Mumbai Suburbs topped with 78 points out of 84.

As per the learning outcomes, measuring language and math learnings of class 3,5,8 and 10 of government aided schools, Sindhudurg was on top with 181 of 290 points, followed by Kolhapur with 180 points and Solapur with 178 points.

Punjab retained its position at the top of the rankings along with Chandigarh. However, no state or union territory scored more than 91% or the highest grade for the academic year 2020-21. PGI measures the transformational change in Indian schools. The Indian School System consists of about 15 lakh schools, 95 lakh teachers and nearly 27 crore students.

The ministry also released PGI 2.0 for 2020-21. The PGI 2.0 revamped to include new indicators including digital education. The weightage given to Governance Processes - 340 of 1,000 points - has been reduced in PGI 2.0, following criticism by educationists. It is now 84 points.

Many educationists stated that a possible reason for this downfall could be schools not uploading data on the education portals. Hence, the real picture is not clear.

The PGI 2.0 has classified states/UTs into ten grades, where the highest achievable grade is Daksh - for states/UT scoring more than 940 out of 1000 points. The subsequent grades are Utkarsh (881-940), Atti-Uttam (821-880), Uttam (761-820), Prachesta 1 (701-760), Prachesta 2 (641-700), Prachesta 3 (581-640), Akanshi 1 (521-580), Akanshi 2 (461-520) and Akanshi 3 (401-460).
