With the spike in COVID-19 cases across Mumbai, city colleges that were gearing up to kickstart operations amidst the pandemic are unsure of doing so anymore due to a lack of clarity regarding the same.

Moreover, with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) delaying the announcement for protocols that are to be followed in view of the pandemic, colleges are left feeling confused with how to go about things.

According to reports, the Maharashtra government had earlier passed a resolution allowing universities and colleges to start physical classes from February 15. In the state, Pune and Nagpur universities have got permission from their local authorities while the Amravati varsity has not, at least in February.

In addition, confusion ensued last week when the University of Mumbai (MU) first directed affiliated colleges to reopen on February 22 and then issued another circular that said colleges in Mumbai city and suburbs would remain closed until further direction from local civic authorities.

Meanwhile, last week, University of Mumbai (MU) officials released a fresh circular which stated that all affiliated colleges, except for those in Mumbai City and its suburbs, can resume in-person classes from February 16.

This circular comes only two days after MU’s initial notification to postpone the reopening of colleges until February 22. Moreover, the reversal comes after MU reportedly received confirmation letters from the collectors of Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Thane rural, and other districts that have colleges affiliated to MU. The University of Mumbai has approximately 800 affiliated colleges across Mumbai, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, and Thane.
