The Maharashtra government has asked schools in the city to provide details on the 15 per cent fee reduction given to students in the academic year 2021-22.

This development came as schools across the state are on summer vacation from today, May 2. In city, the schools will reopen for the academic year 2022-23 from June 13.

While many schools have gone ahead with their existing fee structures, there is a possibility of educational institutions hiking fees when schools return to pre-COVID-19 times in June.

Meanwhile, if reports are to be believed the schools that have given a fee cut are still finding it difficult to recover arrears from parents.

Earlier, in August, the state had issued a government resolution (GR) asking schools to reduce their fees by 15 per cent.

However, the parent bodies had called the order a sham as the state needs to amend the Fee Act or pass an ordinance before issuing a circular. A similar order was passed in 2020-21 following the March 2020 lockdown, which was challenged by some private schools in the Bombay high court (HC).

With complaints of students’ progress reports being held back for non-payment of fees, the deputy director of education last month again asked schools to refund the 15% fees collected or adjust the same in the upcoming academic year.
