The students of Mumbai University (MU) seem to face a quandary as colleges depended on an old MU circular stating that the academic year 2021-22 will begin on June 14, however, a fresh circular confirming this and the fact that colleges will continue lectures online only came around 4 pm on Monday, June 14, hours after colleges had already resumed for the new academic year.

According to reports, the university had earlier released a circular signed by the registrar, addressed to all affiliated colleges. While clarity on online lectures has now come through, MU is yet to respond to queries about teacher and staff attendance in colleges.

Amidst the outbreak of the coronavirus, for the last year, students have been stuck at home fixated on their screens. While most people got used to the routine, several students found practical sessions difficult to understand through the online mode.

On the other hand, the international student count of the MU has dipped to 101 in the 2020-21 academic year from 209 and 227 foreign national or non-resident Indian (NRI) students who had confirmed their admissions in 2018-19 and 2019-20.

Meanwhile, Nepal contributed to a majority of international students approaching MU-affiliated colleges or departments for higher education opportunities for years. However, amidst the pandemic, from 26 and 28 students confirming admissions in the past two academic years, 2020-21 saw only five students from Nepal in MU.

Similarly, 42 students from Afghanistan had confirmed admissions in MU in 2019-20, but in 2020-21, not a single student from the country registered for admissions. Furthermore, NRIs make up for the largest chunk of international students approaching MU. Now, only five NRI students confirmed admissions in 2020-21, compared to 85 and 92 students in 2018-19 and 2019-20, respectively.
