This academic year has brought some good news for candidates seeking admission for undergraduate and postgraduate colleges in Mumbai. The state government has given a nod to 14 new educational institutes for the new academic year. These include five degree colleges in Mumbai- a law college in Malad, a women’s college in Bandra, a night college in Chembur, and one college each in Dahisar and Wadala.

As 14 new institutes are added to the city, the tally of affiliated colleges of the University of Mumbai (MU) has reached 788. The state also approved 28 new courses and seven new divisions in affiliated colleges which will together add up to 4,620 undergraduate and 500 post-graduation seats to MU’s annual intake.

Last month, the state had approved 62 new colleges and also new courses and divisions in the existing colleges across the state in response to the MU’s perspective plan for 2018-2019.

About 22 proposals invited from educational trusts from the government were approved for the current academic year, in order to fill the slots for new colleges. Letter of Intent (LoIs) as per which the trusts were required to meet infrastructure and faculty norms were issued by the government. The trusts claim to have achieved these within months of being given approval.

The new seats will offer aspirants more choices. However, at present, the admission process for undergraduate courses is in a state of mayhem since June 21. The degree admissions have been put on hold as the state government is challenging Bombay High Court’s 2017 decision to exempt minority institutes from reservation for socially-marginalised sections.
