The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has unveiled its “Education Transformation Policy 2026” to modernise municipal schools and enhance the quality of education. Introduced by Sagar Naik during a general body meeting, the proposal received support from the ruling party, while opposition members expressed mixed reactions. A final decision is expected in the next session.
A major aspect of the policy is the gradual expansion of English-medium education, ensuring students from economically weaker sections also have access to it. Authorities emphasised that Marathi-medium education will continue, with efforts to preserve and promote the Marathi language. Implementation is planned for the upcoming academic year.
The policy also introduces significant academic reforms, including aptitude tests in Classes 4 and 7, skill-based education from Class 7 onward, and modern subjects like robotics and artificial intelligence. Greater focus will be placed on sports and overall student development.
Civic officials believe these measures will modernise municipal schools and improve standards. Critics, however, argue that basic infrastructure and teacher training should be prioritised before rolling out such reforms, suggesting further discussion before final approval.
