The civic body of Navi Mumbai, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has decided to have its own medical college in the city. Moreover, it has constituted a committee to chalk out the project.

The civic body spends more than ₹100 crores every year on the health department. As of now, it has a 300-bed hospital at Vashi, two mother and child hospitals in Airoli and Nerul and urban health posts in each ward.

However, as a result of a few medical professionals in the area, the NMMC is unable to provide super speciality care at its hospitals. This led to Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bangar deciding on the medical college to help the civic hospitals get the required manpower for its patients. This is further touted to increase the capacity of the hospitals in the area.

On the other hand, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) is to take strict action against people defecating in public places or dumping waste in open areas as the civic body is touted to deploy squads to monitor those responsible.

As per reports, the residents of Navi Mumbai have been complaining of rampant dumping of waste which includes open defaecation in the slum areas. Moreover, the special squads are also said to conduct special raids on hawkers who used banned plastic bags post the festivities. The squads can also penalize the violators of the norms imposed by the civic body. In addition, the NMMC is said to focus on slum areas, areas near railway tracks, open spaces and mangrove belts which are more prone to waste disposal.
