Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation officials stated that these lockers will be ready by the next academic year. In the first phase, the civic body will build 35,787 lockers in 35 schools and the project is estimated to cost ₹10 crores. An education activist Sudhir Dani stated that though the Central Government has fixed the weight of school bags according to the class, the rules are not being followed. Children also have to carry lunchboxes and water bottles, adding to the weight of the bag.

Some Secondary School Certificate (SSC) schools have days like 'No Bag Day' wherein the kids only get their tiffin and the entire day is focused on education-based activities inside the school premises. Majority of Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) and Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) have locker facilities in their schools.
